Programs for Young Adults

Come in and register for our 5 week summer reading program running June 29th through July 29th. Check out our CALENDAR and PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS below for details.

Summer Reading 2010 - Make Waves at Your Library

Young Adults can work with YA author Megan Frazer, The Secrets of Truth and Beauty on an on-line cultural magazine starting Thursday July 1st from 4-5 pm. Young Adults are also encouraged to write book reviews all summer.

DPL's Teenzone Blog!

Visit the Durham Public Library Teen Zone blog. Librarian Lisa Kleinmann and local children's author Megan Frazer started a blog as a way for teens to share their views on the literary and cultural world around them. The Summer Reading Trivia Question of the Week!

Week 4:  What is the name of the lighthouse that is part of the Fort Constitution Historic site and is next to an active Coast Guard Station in Seacoast NH?  What town is it located in?

Summer 2010 Reading Programs at the Durham Public Library

Tuesday, June 29, 6:30 p.m. (9-12 yr old group) – Hampton Surf Shop Cinnamon Rainbows will visit.  They will bring surfboards and gear and show the group some dry land surfing moves.  Surfers will talk about surfing on the seacoast. We will also share what we’re reading.

Wednesday, June 30, 6:30 p.m. All ages Family night – UNH Marine Docent visit.  Come and learn about our Rocky shores and the sea creatures that inhabit it.  Hear from the experts!

Thursday, July 1, 4:00-5:00 p.m. (young adult/teen group) – Local Young Adult Author, Megan Frazer will visit!  Her book Secrets of Truth & Beauty” is on the current Isinglass book list.  She will work with this group to start an on-line cultural magazine.  New and experienced writers invited!  Come learn from this talented author and Oyster River Graduate.

Friday, July 2, 10:30 a.m. at the ORHS Multi-purpose room.   – Summer Reading kick-off celebration for all ages with the Durham, Lee and Madbury Libraries featuring Toe Jam Band!  This band will have all readers rocking and laughing.  Don’t miss this fun event.

Tuesday, July 6, 6:30 p.m. – (9-12 yr.old group) – WII night!  Come and play WII games!

Wednesday, July 7, 6:30 p.m. – All ages Family night – Family Game Night I.  Come and do some relay races such as a frozen t-shirt race and play some group games, bingo or Pictionary!

Thursday, July 8, 4:00-5:00 p.m. (young adult/teen group) – Local Young Adult Author, Megan Frazer will visit again! 

Tuesday, July 13, 6:30 p.m. – (9-12 yr.old group) – WII night!  Come and play WII games!

Wednesday, July 14, 6:30 p.m. – All ages Family night – 7 person acapella singing group “Earreverence” will perform.  Come and hear some great music with this talented local singing group.

Thursday, July 15, 10:30 a.m. ORHS Multi-purpose room – All ages Wildlife Encounter program with the Durham, Lee and Madbury Libraries.  Come and meet wildlife and learn about them.

Thursday, July 15, 4:00-5:00 p.m. (young adult/teen group)

Tuesday, July 20, 6:30 p.m. – (9-12 yr.old group) – Marine Biologist, Wendy Harris will visit!  Come and learn about what a Marine Biologist does and about the science of Marine Biology and discuss what you are reading.

Wednesday, July 21, 6:30 p.m. – All ages Family night – Jane Cowen-Fletcher author/illustrator of Mama Zooms, It Takes a Village, Farmer Will, Baby Angels, Nell’s Elf and her new book Hello, Puppy visits!  Come and meet local author, Jane Cowen-Fletcher as she reads and talks about her new book Hello, Puppy.  Sales and autographs of her books will follow the program.

Thursday, July 22, 4:00-5:00 p.m. (young adult/teen group)

Tuesday, July 27, 6:30 p.m. – (9-12 yr.old group) – Game Night!  Come and play some board games and relay races.  We will discuss what you are reading.

Wednesday, July 28, 6:30 p.m. – All ages Family night – Family Game Night II. Come and compete again in games (bingo, Pictionary…) and some fun relay races.

Thursday, July 29, 11:00 a.m. ORHS Multi-purpose room – All ages Finale Celebration with Vic ‘n Sticks Rhythm and Recycling Band with the Durham and Madbury Libraries!  Join us in celebrating your summer reading accomplishments.  Vic and Sticks is “musical comedy for the whole family with a great medley of songs, humor, clowning and audience participation.” Vic and Sticks performance is generously sponsored by the Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, the Cogswell and Benevolent Trust, the NH Library Association and the NH State Library.  A special thank-you to the Friends of the Durham Public Library for all their support.  Prize books, reading certificates, and Bagelry Prize will be handed out.  Cake will also be served A big thank-you to the Durham Market, The Bagelry and The Sea Dogs for their prize donations.

Thanks for a great year. A special thanks to Ruth Wharton-MacDonald for facilitating this group and a special thanks to Mama Lena's Pizzeria Stratham for providing the pizza! Watch for information in the fall.

The Durham Public Library will be displaying several local award books throughout the year, and we invite you to read them and then vote for your favorites.

Isinglass Award (sponsored by Barrington Public Library fo 7th and 8th graders)

Flume Award (sponsored by the New Hampshire State Library, site maintained by the Nashua Public Library for grades 9-12)
