Our Collection

Our initial collection originally came from the University of New Hampshire library. We continue to build onto our collection by adding new fiction, nonfiction, young adult, children's books, video, audiobooks, newspapers and magazines. Our collection is on computer allowing searches by author, title, or subject, or key word. New book, video, audio and interlibrary loan requests, and reference questions guide us in building the collection. Tell us what you need. Free internet access is one of the services we offer.

Our Services

You can borrow books, magazines, and newspapers, audio and video tapes, large print books, and museum passes. We also have a free magazine swap.

We will continue to put a priority on children's services. Class visits for story programs or book talks are welcome. Please call to arrange a visit.

Adult programs include a book discussion series through the New Hampshire Humanities Council and lectures.

We can order books for you on interlibrary loan.

If you are homebound, please contact us and we can deliver books to you.

Library Cards

Library Cards are free of charge to Durham residents, as well as students, teachers, and staff in the Oyster River Schools. Cards are also available to nonresident UNH students and faculty who need to use the public library collection to meet class requirements. A $30 fee is charged to residents of other communities who would like Durham library cards.

Policies in Brief

  • What is the check out period?
You can check out books for three weeks, and renew them as desired (unless they are on reserve).
  • How many items can I take out per visit?
You can put 10 items on a card. (2 videos at a time.)
  • How do I apply for a library card?
Please show your ID when you apply. The next time you're in, be sure to pick the card up at the desk. Children can have a card when they can write their whole name.
  • Are there any fines?
The library does not charge for overdue books, there is, however, a "conscience" jar. What you pay is up to you.
  • Is there an after hours book drop?
The book drop is located in front of the library. Please do not put trash and fortune cookies in our book drop. Trash is trash and the cookies just get crushed..
  • How about Interlibrary Loan?
Books not found in our collection can be requested electronically through the State Library, average delivery time is one to two weeks.
  • Can I make any donations?
Due to lack of storage space, Durham Public Library can only accept donated books, videos, etc. that are less than four years old and in excellent condition.

Durham Public Library is located in the Mill Road Plaza and is open 10-8 on Tuesday and Wednesday, 10-5 Thursday and Friday, and 10-1 on Saturday.
