Friends of the Durham Public Library
Who We Are and What We Do!
For over ten years, the Friends of the Durham Public Library have been advocating for and supporting our town library. Friends educate the community about the needs of the Library and continue to advocate for a permanent Library building.
Friends also raise funds to supplement the library budget. Some Friends are active members year round, while others choose to serve on a committee, volunteer at the Library, or participate at specific events. Friends currently:
- Donate cookies to be sold at the circulation desk in support of children's programs
- Sort, box, and store books that are donated to the library
- Hold semi-annual Book Sales of quality used books at the library
- Maintain ongoing book sales, known as Second Reads, at The Bagelry, Breaking New Grounds, and the Library.
Through these activities, the Friends have raised funds for new computers and furniture, new media for the library collection, museum passes, and children's programs.
The Friends meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the Library.
New Friends are always welcome. If you'd like work with a great group of people, and help support your public library, CLICK HERE to download a membership form.

Friends of the Library Receive Award
The Friends of the Durham Public Library were presented a "Special Library Service Contribution Award" from the New Hampshire Library Trustees Association (NHLTA) in Town Council chambers on Monday June 18th. Lillian Edelmann, Library Ambassador for the NHLTA presented the award to the Friends in recognition of their distinguished and devoted service to the library throughout its 10 year history. Chair Sally Hochgraf and Betty Zeiss accepted the award on behalf of the Friends. Former Board of Trustees Chair Luci Gardner submitted the application to the NHLTA.
The library staff and Trustees would like to congratulate the Friends on receiving the Special Library Service Award - it is recognition that is well-deserved. We who work in the library know just how important their efforts are to our operation and we thank them sincerely for their support.
